Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, 80, appeared in court in Algeria on Thursday, charged with offenses related to statements he made to the French media, including suggesting Western Algeria belonged to Morocco. Sansal stated he was only expressing an opinion and did not intend to act against his country. A ten-year prison sentence and a fine of one million dinars were requested by the prosecution. He was arrested on November 16, 2024, and has been in pre-trial detention since.
